Devotions

Pray the timeless prayers of the Church.

Daily Prayers

Foundational prayers every Catholic prays each day — on rising, before meals, before bed.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen.

Act of Hope

O my God, relying on your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Act of Love

O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because you are all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbour as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.

Morning Offering

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here; ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from thee.
From the malicious enemy defend me.
In the hour of my death call me
and bid me come unto thee,
that with thy saints I may praise thee for ever and ever. Amen.

Grace Before Meals

Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive from your bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grace After Meals

We give you thanks, almighty God, for all your benefits, who live and reign for ever and ever. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

  4. Conclude three times: "Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

Stations of the Cross

Christ's journey from condemnation to the tomb — 14 stations. Traditionally prayed on Fridays of Lent.

At each station: V. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

  1. Jesus is condemned to death.
Pilate, fearing the crowd, hands over the innocent Jesus to be crucified. Lord, grant me courage to stand for truth in my life.
  2. Jesus takes up his cross.
Jesus willingly accepts the cross. Teach me to embrace the crosses of my own life without complaint.
  3. Jesus falls the first time.
The weight overcomes him and he falls. Strengthen me to rise again each time I fall.
  4. Jesus meets his Mother.
A sword pierces Mary's heart. Mother of Sorrows, walk with me in my suffering.
  5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
A stranger is pressed into service. Open my eyes to the chance to share my neighbour's burdens.
  6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
Her small act of mercy receives Christ's image. Let me see Christ in small kindnesses.
  7. Jesus falls the second time.
The same fall, the same sin — Lord, raise me up again.
  8. Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem.
"Weep not for me, but for yourselves and your children." Soften my heart toward the world's pain.
  9. Jesus falls the third time.
Exhausted, he falls again. Yet your power lifts even those who have fallen far.
  10. Jesus is stripped of his garments.
Stripped of dignity, Christ accepts it. Strip me of pride.
  11. Jesus is nailed to the cross.
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Grant me the grace to forgive.
  12. Jesus dies on the cross.
"It is finished." Into your hands I commend my spirit at the end of my life.
  13. Jesus is taken down from the cross.
Mary receives her son into her lap. Mother of Sorrows, receive me at my death.
  14. Jesus is laid in the tomb.
In the hope of the third day, I accept the small deaths of my daily life.

Concluding Prayer (Resurrection)

Lord Jesus Christ, your Passion has become our salvation, your death our life. Grant us the grace to take up the cross and follow you. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayers

Personal devotions for before and after receiving Holy Communion.

Before Communion (St. Thomas Aquinas)

Almighty and ever-living God, I approach the sacrament of your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I come sick to the doctor of life, unclean to the fountain of mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light, and poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. Lord, in your great generosity, heal my sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my blindness, enrich my poverty. May I receive the bread of angels, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with the purity and faith, the repentance and love that will benefit my soul's salvation. Amen.

After Communion (St. Thomas Aquinas)

Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank you, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, you have fed me with the precious Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment, but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defence against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the one true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with you. Amen.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

O Jesus, present in the Blessed Sacrament, I adore you, I praise you, I thank you, I love you. In reparation for the indifference and ingratitude shown to you in tabernacles throughout the world, I offer you my heart. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
